Preparations for work to finally start on Ludlow’s collapsed Burway Bridge started today.
The bridge, which is a main entrance into the town, collapsed after last summer’s freak weather caused major flooding.
A bailey bridge was put up and has been controlled by traffic lights since.
Contractors McPhillips, appointed by Shropshire County Council, were today setting up its site compound and carrying out various works in preparation for the start of the replacement of the Burway Bridge. The replacement bridge will cost about £900,000. National Grid Gas was also due on site today to isolate the gas main on the temporary bridge.
Work will also take place this Sunday to install lining restrictions on Gravel Hill and at its junction with Henely Road. This will be carried out in conjunction with Severn Trent’s work on Gravel Hill.
Once these are finished the council will carry on the remaining lining under stop/go signalling. Work will officially start on the bridge next Monday but the closure of the bridge will not be in place until April 21.
