Bucks falter but Smith still backs bid

robsmith2.jpgBoss Rob Smith today shrugged off the disappointment of AFC Telford United’s fourth consecutive defeat to declare: “We’re one cup final from the play-offs.”

The Bucks went down 3-0 at Kettering on Saturday, a result that - combined with results elsewhere - secured the Blue Square North title for the Poppies.

But, with Telford’s main play-off rivals all failing to capitalise, Smith now believes a win in next Saturday’s home clash with nearest challengers Harrogate would be enough to take their season into overtime.

“We’re probably in a better position today than we were last week,” said Smith. “We still need a win, but it looks like four points could do it now.

“It would take a hell of an achievement for Nuneaton, Barrow and Southport to overhaul us if we got another four points.

“If we beat Harrogate on Saturday then we’re three points ahead of them with a game in hand, and that would make it tough for them, too.

“That game becomes a cup final for us now, and it’s certainly a no-lose situation. That game could effectively see us in the play-offs, and if we win it then we’ll be in there.”

Smith was also upbeat about his side’s performance at the weekend, insisting there was no disgrace in losing to a Kettering side that he rates as worthy champions.

The Bucks boss hailed the performance of debutant Emeka Nwadike, and insisted confidence in the camp remained high.

“Kettering were a little bit special on the day and they were too good for us,” added Smith. “Their movement was exceptional.

“But there were some encouraging signs there for us, too. We got it down and played with a little bit of confidence and showed a bit of bravery.

“They showed the sort of standard we need to get up to and we’re way off it at the moment.

“But we’re not too downbeat. People can say what they like about us losing four in a row, but we’ve got the points on the board and we’re where we are in the table for a reason.”

Saturday was poor but if we hadn’t have conceded so early we may have been able to get a hold in the game. Saturday is massive now. Its a must win and I absolutely believe if we get there we can win the play-offs, as once you’re in them whats been happening in the league is history!

We can do this, I want us to be playing Shrewsbury next season not Stafford Rangers!!
