Take-away scheme thrown out

District councillors have thrown out unpopular plans to open a hot food takeaway in north Shropshire. It was hoped to open the business on Wrexham Road, in Whitchurch.

But the plans sparked protests from residents concerned about anti-social behaviour and problems with noise and smells. The police also raised concerns about the potential for trouble in the area.

Despite the advice of planning chiefs to support the scheme with conditions, members of the authority’s development control committee yesterday rejected the scheme.

Planning permission to open a takeaway in the former Spar shop was first refused by councillors in November, but a new application went before the committee last month and was deferred.

North Shropshire District Council’s planning department was flooded with more than 60 letters of objection from neighbours on the grounds it would generate extra noise, smells, litter, and traffic problems. Residents even staged a demonstration to show their strength of feeling.

At the meeting yesterday councillor Paul Wynn said even with the inclusion of a ventilation and extraction system, the smells would affect the nearby houses on higher ground.

He was supported by Councillor Gerald Dakin, who said: “We know where the youths gather and we know there is a problem, and the police know as well.”

Development control manager for the council, Stuart Thomas, said measures had been proposed to ensure residents would not be affected by noise and smell, and that CCTV cameras could be put into place.
