Copper and lead stolen in new metal haul

About £12,000 worth of metal was stolen from a Shropshire business in an overnight raid. A haul of lead and copper was snatched by the thieves.

Bosses at Travis Perkins in Holyhead Road, Oakengates, arrived at 8am today to discover that the metal had been taken.

It comes after lead flashing was also stolen from around windows at two houses in Broseley. Police are linking the two property thefts.

They are the latest in a string of lead thefts across Shropshire which has seen homes, businesses and community buildings targeted.

Police in Telford said the thieves drove across playing fields to get to the Travis Perkins site and loaded up a vehicle with lead and copper at the side of the building.

Officers are studying CCTV footage.

Chris Ammonds, spokesman for Telford police said: “The value of the lead and copper which was stolen was approximately £12,000. We would appeal for anyone with information to come forward.

“Officers discovered tyre treads on the playing fields and they are being examined along with CCTV.”

In Broseley, properties in Church Street and Legges Hill were targeted.

The Church Street incident happened between March 1 and Tuesday, when the theft was discovered by the householder.

The other theft was between about 8am on Saturday and 5pm on Monday, but it is possible the other incident also happened during this time. Constable Allan Hand appealed for people to be vigilant. Anyone with information about the incidents should contact police on 08457 444888.
