We’ve only ourselves to blame

Shrews v BuryOur unbelievable bad run continues, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh, and fans go home once again feeling frustrated after losing 1-0 to Bury. I can’t wait till I am able to report after we have won a game.

We were undone on Saturday by a fantastic strike, whether it was meant is debateable, but we have only ourselves to blame for not picking up any points.

I’ve said in the past that Town don’t seem to have any luck but in football you make your own luck and there were no excuses as we had the chances to score but wasteful finishing has cost us again.

We still look relatively safe but it’s a good job that over the last few games teams below are struggling to pick up points – it’s just a shame that we are having to rely on other teams.

And what of the new signings?

I must admit I was surprised when I had heard we had signed two young lads – Michael Barnes and Martin Riley. I thought Simpson said we needed some more experience, especially from now until the end of the season.

Whether he couldn’t get anybody fitting that bill in I don’t know, but I am not sure if the two young lads are what we now at the present moment. I hope I am proved wrong and to be fair to Barnes he played quite well on Saturday.

Expectations for the remainder of the season must be to try and grind out some wins which will boost the players’ and fans confidence. You can tell confidence is low throughout the team and once not winning becomes a habit it is very difficult to get out of.

The players have only got a few games left to try and put this right and what better than ending the season on a positive note than beating our local rivals Wrexham and Chester who we play soon.

Some bit of good news and it proves we can win something – our matchday programme has been voted the best in League 2 – I cannot speak for all of the other teams’ programmes, but I must admit ours has always been a good read.

well said if only we can eke out another 3 or 4 draws until the new man can put things right next summer. my own thoughts are that the squad have stopped believing in themselves. confidence needs to be lifted and soon. perhaps the warmer weather will lift them, on present form i cannot see town beating wrexham, chester, macclesfield etc. so come on paul simpson gird up your loins and the teams and get them to believe in tnemselves again or else, time is not on your side. a good root up the fundamentals and a cry of floreat salopia may do thre trick. whatever you do get rid of the club’s new leo the lion badge it has brought nothing but bad luck and a succession of managers.. perhaps the pitch could do with a good flood, are we missing our annual deluge at the gay meadow. do something soon please yours in despair in deepest devon

The lads played with great confidence Saurday, they had the lions share of posesion, they are just so predicable going foreward and made it so easy for the opposing defence. At the moment we could not buy a goal. Bury only won because they scored and we didnt, other than that small fact we were far the better team but we never looked like scoring. If only goals were awarded on criterea other than the ball going in the net.

The fact Bury won is that they did score more goals than us, perhaps someone should tell the players that its goals that win matches, I used to make excuses for the town as well saying we were the better team but what the good of a good team who cant score goals. at least one more than the opposition, look at the league table all the teams above us are better and I dont like it.
