A Shropshire husband-to-be gave an unusual display of commitment to his fiancee when he abseiled down one of Bridgnorth’s landmarks.
Daredevil Stephen Power, 30, from Bridgnorth, was “roped” into the sponsored abseil down St Leonard’s Church as part of his stag do today.
He is set to marry Nicola Hodnett, 23, next month but ahead of their big day he showed all the bravado of a soon-to-be-married stag to drop down the historic 74ft gothic tower.
The retained firefighter said it was just part of a busy stag day for him, which will also see him go go-karting, to a horse racing meet in Wolverhampton and then for the traditional stag night out.
He said: “One of the lads asked what time the stag do started and I said 10.30am so he said ‘well you’ll have time to fit in an abseil then’.
“Not all of the lads could get here in time so I’ve made them sponsor me instead. I don’t mind doing it and it’s something different for the stag do.”
Mr Power was one of several intrepid people abseiling down the tower today as part of an event organised by Churches Conservation Trust.
Funds raised will go towards the trust’s Buildings Future programme.
