Takeaway plan set for go-ahead

A controversial hot food takeaway in a Shropshire market town is set to get the green light from councillors next week.

Members of North Shropshire District Council’s development control committee are being recommended to approve plans for the takeaway in Wrexham Road, Whitchurch, when they meet on Wednesday, despite strong opposition from neighbours.

The proposed takeaway would be sited in the former Spar shop and would be open Monday to Friday, from noon to 9pm, and Saturdays from noon to 10pm.

The council’s planning department has already been flooded with more than 60 letters of objection from neighbours on the grounds the takeaway would generate extra noise, smells and litter, and would cause traffic problems in the area. Concerns have also been raised by Whitchurch Town Council and West Mercia Police.

Planning permission for the takeaway was refused by councillors in November last year, but an amended application which went before the committee earlier this month was recommended for approval.

Lesley Watson, who lives opposite the site, was one of about a dozen residents who staged a demonstration against the takeaway earlier this month.

She said she hoped to speak against the takeaway at next week’s meeting. It will start at 2pm at Edinburgh House, New Street, Wem.
