The Shropshire Star’s Battle of the Bands competition is giving the local music scene a huge boost - according to one of the judges Rob Mulliner, who runs Salop Music Centre.
Five bands are set to fight it out during Sunday evening’s £6,000 final at the Buttermarket in Shrewsbury, with the first act due to perform at 7pm.
The judging panel will include Rob Mulliner, Kevin Horaks, from A Wolf at Your Door Records, Andrea Proffitt, from the Indeco Festival, and James Shaw, from the Shropshire Star.
Mr Mulliner will be supplying a prize pool worth more than £5,000 and is delighted to see the Shropshire music scene benefit from the competition.
He said: “From all aspects, it is a good thing - it is good that it is growing.
“If this sort of music scene didn’t grow like this, then the general music chart would be a very dismal place.”
Gair Davis, from Soundscape Studios, is offering the winners studio time and believes Sunday’s final will be a chance for people to see the best that Shropshire has to offer.
He said: “Those bands that we have in the final are promising to bring along a lot of fans, so it should be a fantastic night. We know they are all top-of-the-range performers who will push each other very close in the race for the big prize.
“I am looking forward to working with the winners when they come in to my studio to record their tracks.”
Also on offer on Sunday evening will be the Rob James Award for best musician, which includes a trophy and £100 prize.
In addition, bands will be playing for the chance to perform in front of 5,000 people at this summer’s Indeco Festival in Shrewsbury, plus 100 cds.
Doors open at 6.30pm, with the acts due to play between 7pm and 10.30pm.
Tickets are £5 in advance, £7 on the door, and are available from Salop Music Centre, Telford Shopping Centre, Recycled Records and www.theticketsellers.co.uk
