Defender Kelvin Langmead today called on Shrewsbury Town to restore pride in the closing weeks of the season after admitting: “It hurts where we are in the table.”
Town have managed just one victory in 17 games and have slipped to 17th place in League Two.
Encouraging signs have been on offer since Paul Simpson filled the managerial vacancy a fortnight ago.
But the 22-year-old, who offered a stinging appraisal of his side’s season after the 4-1 defeat at Barnet, is desperate to end the barren winless run in the closing weeks of the season.
“We hit rock bottom at Barnet and as players you have to take notice when that happens,” said Langmead.”We have looked more solid over the last few games and it was unfortunate that we didn’t get a goal in the second half against Notts County.
“The new manager has come in and training has been excellent. We want to show the manager what we can do and the best way we can impress him is by winning games.
“We haven’t won for a long time and it hurts where we are in the table because 17th isn’t good enough for this football club.
“But we are doing everything we can to get the wins and put the pride back.
Meanwhile, manager Paul Simpson, who remains “hopeful” of adding a new loan signing before tomorrow’s deadline, praised last night’s showing from Town’s reserve team.
A Guy Madjo brace, as well as goals from Luke Jones, Darren Moss and trialist Martin Riley, helped Town to a 5-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion at Oteley Road.
And Simpson said: “I was very happy and I thought the attitude was spot on.
“It’s important to get a winning mentality running throughout the club.”
