Wayne Rooney might think he’s top of the football world but one Shrewsbury youngster is right behind him.
And six-year-old Ethan Short, of Harlescott Grange, even claims to look like the Manchester United star.
Ethan has been nick-named Rooney by his friends and is celebrating after winning a host of trophies.
But the budding footballer says he is a Liverpool supporter through and through and hopes to one day play for his favourite team.
Ethan will be hoping to compare his skills to those of the real Wayne Rooney if he takes to the field tonight as part of the England squad taking on France in a friendly.Yesterday it was announced that tonight’s match will see David Beckham collect his 100th England cap making the 32-year-old only the fifth England player to reach 100 caps.
Ethan’s mum, Samantha Short, 33, said her son was football crazy and said he attended three different football clubs, playing at the Grange Sports Centre and at the playing fields at Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology. She said: “He is with the Shrewsbury Junior Creche and does the football soccer course.
“He cleared out the last competition.
“It was held over 12-weeks and they have about four different competitions like penalty shoot-outs and player of the camp and he won trophies in all those competitions.”
Miss Short said: “Everybody says Ethan looks like Wayne Rooney.
“He goes into the local shop and all the boys say ‘Hello Rooney’.
“I thought why can’t he look like Steven Gerrard! Ethan is always playing football and practising his skills.”
Ethan, who wants to be a premiership footballer when he grows up, said: “I love football.
“I do look like Wayne Rooney but I want to play for Liverpool.”
Coach Sean Holland, of Pro Soccer, said: “Ethan is a brilliant player - he definitely knows where the goal is.
“He wins lots of competitions and won a few trophies last term and is progressing well.
“I would love to see where he is playing in 10 or 15 years time as he’s a very good player - he’s definitely one to look out for.”

They both have two eyes,two ears,a nose and a mouth…but that’s about it!
