Organisers of the Shropshire Star’s £6,000 Battle of the Bands competition today issued a final call to fans to support a gig featuring the best local talent.
The Buttermarket, at Shrewsbury, will tomorrow night host the first of two gigs featuring the cream of unsigned acts from Shropshire and Mid Wales.
Forty-seven bands entered the competition and just nine will play in two finals nights, with gigs tomorrow from 5.30pm until 9pm and next Sunday from 6.30pm until 10.30pm.
Battle of the Bands spokesman James Shaw said: “We’ve got two great nights of live music planned.
“Tickets are available on the door or in advance from Salop Music Centre, in Shrewsbury, or Telford Shopping Centre.”
Tomorrow’s concert will feature a set from young indie band Fakie 180 between 6pm and 6.30pm. They will be followed by rock combo Pocket Rocket from 6.45pm to 7.15pm.
Shrewsbury indie trio Deco will play from 7.30pm to 8pm and Telford electronic maestro Cold Train will finish the evening with a set from 8.15pm to 8.45pm.
Readers were given the chance to vote for their favourite bands in an online poll. Some of the bands that featured in the poll later withdrew from the competition or were unable to play because of other commitments.
Rob Mulliner, from Salop Music Centre, one of the competition’s principal sponsors, said: “This competition showcases a lot of high quality acts.
“People can pop into Salop Music Centre to buy tickets for tomorrow night’s gig or for the final next Sunday. Tickets are only a fiver.”
There are a host of prizes on offer, with most going to the overall winner.
Among the prize pool is the chance to open an indie festival at Shrewsbury’s Quarry Park in July, thousands of pounds worth of equipment, a photo shoot, £100 spot prize, studio time, CDs and mentoring advice.
The competition is sponsored by Salop Music Centre, The Buttermarket, Soundscape Studios, Wolf At Your Door Music and Indieco. Doors open tomorrow night at 5.30pm.
The editor’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
