Plan for homes at restaurant

A Shrewsbury restaurant could be bulldozed after developers unveiled plans to build town centre apartments.

Morris Property, which owns the China Rose in St Austin’s Street, wants to make way for a housing scheme.

The news comes after it was revealed yesterday that Bar Med in nearby Lower Claremont Bank and Yates’s in Mardol are to close this weekend.

Morris has submitted an application to Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council to build five two-bedroom apartments, three one-bedroom apartments and a three-bedroom townhouse.

There would be off-street parking for several vehicles and an amenity area for residents.

Councillor Andrew Wagner, ward member for the town centre, said it was sad news that another venue could be closing.

He said: “It’s not nice to see businesses closing in that area and it’s not nice for the regular customers or the owners. It’s a sign of the times and hopefully nothing else will be closing in Shrewsbury.”

Nobody was available for comment today from either the China Rose or Morris, and there has been no time scale indicated for when the restaurant could close.

It was also unclear whether the restaurant’s bosses had been offered alternative premises.

Wayne Barraball, head of development control at the council, said Morris’s plans involved the demolition of the China Rose and the former Jenko’s Mongolian Barbecue, which used to occupy the lower floor of 5 and 6 St Austin’s Street.
