Rise in burial costs proposed

graves.jpgThe cost of burying relatives in Ludlow could soar for people who live outside the town’s boundaries. And the costs of staging Ludlow’s Food Festival and Ludlow’s Green Fair are also set to rise.

The price rises are up for approval by town councillors after news yesterday that the cost of the Local Produce Market was to soar by 82 per cent, from £330 to £600.

Today Councillor Tony Pound, who has drawn up the new pricing structure, said he wanted to give Ludlovians a better deal.

He said: “We’re putting up the prices of markets run by people who are coming into the town, but we are keeping down the price of the normal market.”

Councillor Pound said it was fair to put up prices for burials for people living outside Ludlow’s boundaries. The cost of burial rights at Ludlow’s cemetery for townspeople is frozen at £270, but for non-parishioners it is up from £540 to £810.

A report to the council says the cost of renting space in Castle Square is to increase for Ludlow Food Festival organisers by 94 per cent, from £438 to £850.

The cost of staging Ludlow’s Green Fair is to rise 62 per cent, from £371 to £600.

The charges will be presented to members.

good to see the ludlovian party led by the estimable Councillor Pound forging ahead with it’s punitive mission to widen barriers…what’s next we wonder since said councillor Pound appears unstoppable as well as unreasonable?

Oh so the produce market run by Local to Ludlow is run by people from out of town is it? And the Food Festival is run by a board of 8 directors, at least 6 of whom live in Ludlow. What is the problem with this man? Why does he have a chip on his shoulder against anyone not living , or preferably born, within earshot of the bells of St. lawrence’s?
