Seven up - boss’s big target

Rob SMith and Larry ChambersRob Smith today set AFC Telford United a target of seven points from the nine on offer next week, claiming it would leave the Bucks on the brink of guaranteeing their play-off spot. The Bucks face a testing trip to Lincolnshire tomorrow to meet Gainsborough Trinity, before hosting Nuneaton on Tuesday and Redditch on Saturday week.

Manager Smith believes two wins and a draw from those three games would virtually ensure his side finish in the top five and have their shot at a second successive promotion.

“All we are looking at is the next week and if we could get seven points from those three games we would be in a fantastic position going into the last seven games,” he said.

“I think seven points from the three games would all but guarantee us a play-off spot and that is all we are looking at.

“We are having an unbelievable season and we are just going about our business and just want to carry on as we have been doing.”

The Bucks, however, are sure to have one eye on leaders Kettering, who host Worcester tomorrow and lie just three points ahead of the Bucks - albeit from one game less.

But Smith believes Gainsborough will provide the toughest opposition Telford have faced in recent weeks.

“I think it’s going to be our hardest game since Boston away,” he said. “We have been on good form but, in all fairness, that has been against teams below us.

“I know Gainsborough are below us but they are going well at the moment and the fact they beat Kettering 3-0 a few weeks ago tells you how hard tomorrow will be.”

Smith is considering including Indy Khela in the squad after the defender came through a 35-minute reserve run-out in last night’s 2-1 home defeat to Kidderminster.

Vaughan Thomas and Carl Rodgers are both out through injury, while Steve Jagielka serves a one-match suspension.

    They can do it.

If they played like they did last week against Hinckley then there is no stopping them.

    The end is in sight.
