Motorists faced traffic chaos in Shrewsbury because one of the town’s busiest roads was closed for nearly two hours after a car crashed into a wall.
Police closed Coton Hill following the crash, in which a Vauxhall Vectra left the road and collided with a wall outside the Bird in Hand pub at 6pm yesterday.
Firefighters had to cut the driver of the vehicle, a 33-year-old, free before he was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with serious injuries.
Nobody else was in the car at the time and no other vehicles were involved.
Traffic built up on Coton Hill following the smash, with the road remaining closed until just before 8pm.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said an ambulance and incident support officer were called out just after 6pm.
He said: “When the crew arrived they found a vehicle that had left the road and collided with what appeared to be a garden wall.
“The car had suffered significant front end damage and the wall was described as having a large crack in it.
“Although the driver was not physically trapped, the crews asked the fire service to remove the front doors so that they could extricate the man using a neck collar and spinal board.
“The 33-year-old from Shrewsbury was complaining of injuries to his chest, back, leg and shoulder.
“He was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for further assessment and treatment. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.”
Richard Ewels, a spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: “The road was blocked in both directions while the emergency services worked at the scene.”
