Midfielder Jamie Vermiglio could today be cleared to return to the AFC Telford United fold - providing he gets the all-clear from a scan on his broken toe.The tough-tackling midfielder has been out since breaking his second metatarsal during the 1-0 win at Workington on February 2.
But boss Rob Smith hopes he could now return to training this week, and get fit in time to play a big role in the Blue Square North run-in.
“Jamie’s having a scan today and if he gets the okay that it has healed then he can start training straight away,” Smith revealed.
“If we can get him fit for the last few games then it would be a welcome addition for us. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get the all-clear because he’s a young lad and it should have healed.”
Vermiglio’s absence has seen Jon Adams and Gary Fitzpatrick get the chance to forge a partnership in the middle of the park.
And Smith admits he has been surprised by just how well they have done together during a run of seven wins in the last eight games.
“The two boys in there have been outstanding and they’ve been a real bonus for us because we’d never have dreamed of playing them together but they’ve really taken up the mantle,” he added.
“Jon’s been excellent and Gary Fitzpatrick epitomises everything about a professional player.”
Meanwhile, Smith has all but ruled out making any more additions to his squad ahead of the transfer deadline later this month.
He has added striker Michael Husbands and defender Stuart Whitehead to his squad since the turn of the year but feels it would take more injuries to force him back into the market.
“My only area of concern is the middle of the park if we got another injury, but we’re more than happy and Michael and Stuart should be our last bits of business for the season,” the manager said.
