A Shropshire town took a step back to a bygone age when a pair of shire horses clattered through the streets. The horses, from Thwaites Brewery, toured Whitchurch before a rugby match between Whitchurch Rugby Club and Lichfield on Saturday.
The visit by the horses was organised to mark the opening of the rugby club’s new community room. People had a chance to meet and pet the animals at the club and as they went around the town.
Stuart Kay, from the club, said the horses had proved to be popular and dozens of people turned out to watch the spectacle.
He said: “The event was absolutely marvellous. There was people waiting for the horses on the road.
“They turned up at the club and they stopped as they went around town. They proved to be pretty popular, they always are and they looked impressive. It worked well.”
Mr Kay added that the horses come to the town about once every four or five years.
And to top off the day, Mr Kay said Whitchurch Rugby Club had beaten Lichfield 27-15.
“The young lads played well,” he added.
The club was formed in 1936 and has four senior sides, one ladies side, one colts team and 10 mini and junior sides.
The club also has some new decking which was sponsored by Timberlink in Market Drayton.
