British star Tommy Searle got the season off to a flier with victory in the Grand Final in front of a packed crowd at the Hawkstone Park International Moto-cross.
More than 10,000 fans turned out for the 10th running of the annual event at the north Shropshire circuit, and saw Searle take the top honours with a narrow victory over reigning MX1 world champion Steve Ramon.
But there was disappointment for fans of Shropshire rider Ray Rowson as he was airlifted to hospital after a heavy fall in his first race.
Much had been expected of Rowson, following an encouraging start to 2008 for his new team, PAR Homes Honda.
But he hit a bump as he ended his first lap and was sent flying over the handlebars, suffering a broken rib and severe bruising.
It means he is doubtful to appear at the opening round of the British Championship at Donington Park this Sunday.
