The leader of Telford & Wrekin Council today urged bosses at the borough’s IT giant Capgemini to help the 300 employees who will be losing their jobs to find alternative employment.
Workers at Capgemini in Telford town centre were left devastated yesterday when bosses revealed 300 workers would be made redundant as part of the UK-wide cost-cutting plan.
A total of 450 jobs will be axed at Capgemini sites across the UK - with Telford workers baring the brunt. Just 86 of the 450 jobs were offered as voluntary redundancies.
The workers to be made redundant are employed on contract with HM Revenue and Customs.
Councillor Andrew Eade, leader of the borough council, said: “These job cuts are deeply concerning for all of the affected staff and their families.
“We hope that Capgemini will provide these workers with a sufficient support package to enable them to move on to alternative employment.”
Company bosses said arrangements were already under way to help the workers. Paul Davies, spokesman for Capgemini, said: “We are currently exploring alternative employment opportunities with the Capgemini group as well as providing on-site outplacement services.”
Union spokesman Chris Morrison, of PCS Capgemini group, said it was the most traumatic day he had ever dealt with at the site.
Hundreds of workers left the offices in tears after being told of their uncertain future with the company.

Unfortunately the various companies responsible for delivering Government IT are being allowed to export UK IT jobs to cheaper locations around the world. This ‘human asset-stripping’ is one of the ways in which they hope to turn a profit.
I’m sure most of the staff at CapGemini (which is French IT company - not a Shropshire one!) will find alternative work, as they are well-qualified, literate, numerate people with good work experience to offer.
The anger and disappointment is caused by the arbitrary nature of these redundancies, which have been handled very badly, and the fact that all of the work these people were doing is still there to be done. Oh, and Leslie - this is a discussion forum, not a phone text message. Please reply in English next time.
Management have seen this coming for months and not done anything about it. Never mind the people just look at the profits
The real kick in the teeth is that these jobs are now being advertised on the internet!
They were placed on there 2 hours before we got told we were made redundant. If that’s how they treat
us all; I am so relieved to be out of this awful company.
