Are Val and Frank Oldaker the “greenest” couple in the county? That’s the question being posed to the judges in this year’s inaugural Pride of Shropshire awards.
The pair, from Underdale in Shrewsbury, are among the latest nominees in the new competition to reward and recognise those who go the extra mile to make a difference in the community.
It is jointly organised by the Shropshire Star and Shropshire Partnership, and supported by a string of other local businesses.
There are categories for entrepreneurs, learners, volunteers, carers and green families, as well as good neighbours, people of courage, “healthy stars”, and organisers of community projects.
Retired couple Val and Frank have been put forward in the Greenest Family category in recognition of their volunteer work with a number of environmental initiatives.
James Thompson, of Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council, said: “They live their lives in a very sustainable way and crucially they inspire others to follow their lead.”
Among the latest entries in the Community award are Ian Kerry and his team at Arts Alive near Bishop’s Castle, which co-ordinates the Flicks in the Sticks programme taking big-screen movies out to rural towns and villages.
Dilys Thorpe, from Clun, one of several to nominate the group, said: “This innovative community scheme is especially relevant to those with no transport, to those who don’t like to travel along dark country lanes at night, to the disabled, and the elderly.”
The local policing teams at Broseley and Much Wenlock have also been nominated for a Community award, with Constable Alan Hand and community support officer Malcolm Goddard singled out for special praise for initiatives including the creation of a local boxing club for youngsters.
Among the latest nominations for the Volunteer award is Gerry Cullen of Radbrook Green in Shrewsbury, who has been a WRVS volunteer with the Meals on Wheels service since 1986, and drove for the Alzheimer’s Centre until the age of 79.
Colin Spicer, managing director of Shropshire Newspapers, said: “If you know someone who deserves recognition for their tireless efforts, please take a few moments to nominate them for one of our awards. It will be time well spent.”
