Shop closing after 20 years

A well known Bridgnorth town centre shop is to close. The Pine Shop, in Whitburn Street, is shutting down after more than 20 years.

The move is down to crippling rises in rent and the loss of revenue from poor tourism after last summer’s floods, it was claimed today.

Owner Nick Kyrikaou said the furnishing shop would close in late April. He will combine his trading with his brother’s shop, Merridale, in Wolverhampton.

Mr Kyrikaou said he would be sad to leave the town and revealed there were a number of factors behind his decision, including the high cost of renting the shop.

He said: “We were going to have to renew the lease for another six years and we looked at it. Bridgnorth suffered a lot last summer due to the Severn Valley Railway being closed after the floods and we felt the effect from that. So with the steep increase in rental over the last few years we had to come to this difficult decision.

“We just couldn’t commit to another long-term lease with things how they are. I’m going to rationalise my business with my brother’s in Wolverhampton so customers can stay with us.”

The closure could mean another town centre shop being left empty, with more than a dozen shops either for sale or for let at present.

However estate agents Nock Deighton has previously said that the shops are in demand, especially among national firms.
