A Shropshire brook which has been diverted while major repair work is carried out on a historic bridge will never return to its original channel, engineers have said.
The cost of diverting the Rea Brook and stabilising the bridge in Sutton Way, Shrewsbury, is believed to be in the region of £450,000.
And the water will stay running along the new channel after it was discovered the bridge has been too badly damaged by floodwater.
Shropshire County Council started urgent work to stabilise the Kingfisher Valley bridge earlier this month.
Diverting the brook has involved excavating an estimated 4,000 cubic metres of soil to form a new river channel.
Once the brook was diverted, engineers were able to assess the damage.
