Top athlete to open centre

Ashia HansenA new £2.2 million sports facility in Cleobury Mortimer will be officially opened on Friday by a gold-medal winning athlete.

Ashia Hansen, the British number one triple jumper will open a newly-built sports centre at Lacon Childe School.

The new facilities include changing rooms, a viewing gallery, a new entrance hall, offices and other indoor facilities.

It is the second phase of Cleobury Sports 2000, a project which has already included the construction of new sports pitches at the school. Today school headteacher Richard Meredith said he was delighted that the project was complete and that a star guest would perform the opening ceremony.

He said: “We are opening our new sports facilities on Friday. We have Ashia Hansen, the British number one triple jumper doing the honours and the ceremony will take place at 1.30pm.

“Ashia will then be leading some coaching sessions with the pupils for the rest of the afternoon.

“We are delighted that the second phase of the project is complete.

“We are also thrilled that Ashia Hansen will be opening the changing rooms and other facilities,” he added.

Hansen is one of the biggest names in UK athletics. She was awarded the MBE in 2003 and is a member of the Birchfield Harriers Athletics Club in Birmingham, along with other successful British athletes such as Denise Lewis, Kelly Sotherton, Mark Lewis-Francis and Katharine Merry.
