Shropshire sports fans are set for mixed news as events around the county battle to beat the freezing temperatures.
Tomorrow’s National Hunt race meeting at Ludlow has already fallen by the wayside after the south Shropshire track failed an inspection early this morning.
But county football officials are hopeful tomorrow night’s two Shropshire Challenge Cup semi-finals will go ahead.
Bob Davies, clerk of the course at Ludlow, yesterday issued a gloomy bulletin over the chances of tomorrow’s fixture receiving the thumbs-up. And his worst fears were realised by a sharp overnight frost.
“It was a very straight forward decision I’m afraid,” said Davies. ” We have had frost every night since Friday. We went down to minus seven last night and the frost is about two inches in the ground.
“Our only hope was that the forecast for last night was wrong but it has turned out as they predicted.
“If the thaw started this morning, we might just about be raceable by Thursday afternoon but we would have no chance for tomorrow.”
Today’s meeting at Sedgefield was also called off.
The forecast increase in temperatures later in the week means prospects are good for Sunday’s point-to-point meeting at Eyton-on-Severn.
It’s a similar story for tomorrow’s two last four ties in the Challenge Cup, between Shawbury United and Bridgnorth Town at Shifnal, and the all County-Premier League clash between Wem Town and Shifnal United’ 97 at Sundorne Sports Village.
