Estate shops to be demolished

A row of shops in Shrewsbury is set to be razed to the ground and will not be replaced in a bid to rid an estate of anti-social behaviour.Residents in Sundorne have welcomed new plans by a housing association to provide affordable homes and improve community facilities in the area. In the early stages of the scheme, proposals included replacing the existing shops at Moston Road, with new ones.

But after consultation showed residents would rather see the shops removed, due to concerns over anti-social behaviour, the plans have been revised.

About 70 residents were able to see how their initial feedback had been incorporated into the new plans for the first time on Saturday at the Lantern Community Hall in Meadow Farm Drive.

The new plans include removing the shops as well as a block of garages and adding a new community room for the proposed sheltered housing.

Sepp Sargeant, head of investment services at Severnside, said the association worked hard to meet the needs of residents in the Sundorne area when drawing up the new plans.

He said: “We were delighted to meet so many local residents on Saturday and show them how their comments have been taken on board.

“Consultation is all about asking the community what they want, and we are pleased to have been able to work with residents so closely, even before the formal planning application stage, to develop a scheme that meets their needs.

“The new proposals have been particularly well-received by the older residents living in Moston Green.

“In the main they are pleased that their existing one-bedroom bungalows would be replaced with new two-bedroom bungalows, which will improve the standard of accommodation and also be more accessible for wheelchairs.”

Following the consultation Severnside will now look to submit the plans for formal planning permission by the end of March, as well as submitting a revised bid for funding to the Housing Corporation.

Development of the new homes would be phased with the aim that residents whose homes are to be replaced with new accommodation only have to move once - directly into their brand new homes.

Then the anti-social yobs will have won.

When the yobs grow up I hope they remember that reason the landscape is now devoid of shops / bus shelters / playing fields and that firemen no longer turn out when their houses burn down is entirely down to them!

What a load of wimps - first to surrender to the invading hoards if we were ever invaded no doubt !!!

If feral gangs carry on providing estates with anti-social behaviour then according to the reaction of the above - most of these estates will be bulldozed to get rid of the yobs !!!

It beggars total and utter belief. Please Sir who is in charge of the assylum and how do I get out of it ? !!!

I read this in total disbelief - so rather than sort out the cause of the trouble, just demolish the shops. It’s easier I suppose - in the short term.

As a strategy this is flawed…
there was some trouble last night around that last lampost still standing, OK demolish it then, that’ll stop’em.

    Now there’s a plan.

Young yobs ,or shall we say teenagers will all way hang around where ever there is light or shelter .There is little for them to do in a evening on many estates with no youth clubs or organised events. Many parents having no idea what their youngsters are up to.
Moston roads shops are out dated and an eye sore to an estate that has put up with the reputation, noise, trouble, burnt cars, and drugs and not to mention the rubbish that litters the whole area. Which is trying to regenerate?
I for one think they are long over due to go and welcome the plans.
If children are include in their area they learn to respect it. The proof is the mural that is still has no graffiti on it which is on the side of Moston road Shops which the children where involved in doing. A success I say, it give us hope.
