Call for views on tax rise

council-tax1.jpgCouncil chiefs in Bridgnorth have launched a public consultation over this year’s council tax rise ahead of the levy being set next week.

A provisional rise of 2.95 per cent has been agreed by the authority’s finance and resources committee for 2008/09 - the lowest rise for seven years.

It means a rise of £3.06 a year or 6p a week for the average Band D property.

Westgate bosses are now urging people to have their say on the proposed increase ahead of councillors voting on it next Wednesday.

They want householders to contact the authority with their views on the proposed budget, which will come into effect on April 1.

A spokesman for the district council said it was proposing a number of improvements to services as part of the budget including street cleaning, repairs to industrial units and an enhanced grass cutting regime.

He said: “As well as maintaining and improving our current levels of service, we also intend to include a number of improvements, some of which meet the requirements of new laws and responsibilities given to councils by the Government.”

The council’s website is running a poll over the proposed increase. Views can be given by writing to the Chief Executive, Budget Consultation, Westgate, Bridgnorth, WV16 5AA or e-mailing consult@bridgnorth-dc.gov.uk
