A man has launched a letter campaign against motorists who ignore speed limits along a Shropshire road.Ian Paige estimates that 60 per cent of motorists who use Ludlow Road, Church Stretton, drive too fast. The road has a 30mph limit, but Mr Paige, who lives in Ludlow Road, claims that most people ignore it and fears someone will be injured.
He has written to Shropshire County Council, South Shropshire District Council, West Mercia Police and Church Stretton Town Council, as well as members of his local Neighbourhood Watch, calling for action.
Mr Paige said he thought people did not care motorists broke the speed limit. He said he feared people would be injured in accidents, unless traffic-calming measures were introduced.
His letter-writing campaign started four months ago, but he said there had not been any action promised.
“Sadly, the file I have is slowly building up in the amount of letters from various quarters,” he said.
“They all indicate action, but the results are all amounting to nothing that will prevent numerous and idiotic examples of dangerous motorists using the road as if it was a race track.”
Today county council spokesman Laura Owen said officers would look into Mr Paige’s campaign.
She said: “Like Mr Paige, the county council wishes that all motorists would observe the set speed limit and not drive at excessive speeds. The county council constantly reviews different locations across Shropshire to see what work its highways department needs to undertake.”
Mr Paige’s campaign mirrors similar calls for action from other residents in Church Stretton. Last year, residents took to the roads armed with speed guns to find out how fast drivers travelled.
They passed their results to police, who promised to try to tackle the problem.
The town straddles the A49, the scene of many fatal and serious injury collisions.
