Motorists in Oswestry who flout parking regulations will face increased penalties from April.
Charges will be increased from £60 to £70 for higher level penalties, which include parking in a disabled person’s space without displaying valid disabled badges, parking in a restricted area and causing an obstruction.
The increase was welcomed by councillors at yesterday’s full council meeting. However off-street violations, which include not purchasing a pay and display ticket and staying longer in a space than permitted, will drop from £60 to £50.
Members heard that in 2006 the council transferred the monitoring and management of its car parks, which include Oak Street, Festival Square and Oswald Road, to the ParkRight group, which also took over the on-street parking enforcement.
The decision to recommend the lowering of the fines has been made after the government brought in new traffic orders requiring councils to set specified penalty charges.
Dave Jones, from Oswestry’s technical services department, said that the district authorities using ParkRight were all recommending that the lower charges be brought in for off-street and higher for on-street penalties.
He said that since ParkRight took over, its staff had issued almost 200 tickets in borough car parks.

To actally collect fines means handing out tickets. There is no enforcement on the streets after 2030hrs and not very much between about 1700hrs and 2030hrs, therefore what is the point?
One can abandon a vehicle anywhere in Oswestry at night without let or hinderance. The police are no help since decriminalisation, in fact a passable imitation of the Pontius Pilate syndrome is evident.
Many of Oswestrys traffic problems stem from the same lack of enforcement over the last,in my personal experience, twenty years. That said, since Park Right came to town, AND when they are on duty, things have improved.
Probably justified but more important where is the £70 going.
Also larger new notices warning of the new fines in car parks etc
