South Shropshire District Council’s flood committee will today meet to discuss Ludlow’s future following last summer’s disastrous floods.
The committee is expected to seek guarantees from the Environment Agency that culverts, streams and other water courses are being cleared, to prevent future flooding.
Among the items discussed will be the possible reopening of Lower Corve Street. The road has been closed since July to prevent motorists using it as a short cut and emergency service vehicles have been using the temporary Bailey bridge over the River Corve.
But the bridge is due to be removed this spring, so a permanent £1 million bridge can be built, meaning Lower Corve Street must be reopened.
Today Councillor Martin Taylor-Smith said: “I’ve spoken to dozens of residents and they are against it reopening, unless we can ensure it is properly policed.”
