Thousands hit by power cuts

lightbulb.jpgThousands of people were affected by a series of power cuts in the Wellington area over the weekend. The blackouts were caused by faults in underground high-voltage cables.Engineers, who restored the power, were today investigating the cause of the problems.

More than 2,500 customers were cut off early yesterday and a further 1,800 left without power just after 5pm.

And shortly after 9am today, another power cut occurred, lasting about 30 minutes and affecting 1,600 customers, including Wellington Medical Practice and Tesco in Haygate Road, Wellington.

Dave Bagnall, manager at Tesco, said: “We closed for about an hour yesterday and this morning for about half an hour. We’ve not lost any stock,” he said.

Jaclyn Green, of Orleton Terrace, said: “There was a power cut about 5.30pm last night. We had to go out for dinner, as I imagine a lot of people did. We got home about 7.30pm and it was back on.”

Wellington town councillor Dorothy Roberts, of Rose Crescent, added: “We had two power cuts last night.”

Andrew Barrow, spokesman for Central Networks, said: “We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience. We had a fault with a high voltage cable this morning. We had to take the network down and engineers worked as quickly as they could. They switched to another part of the grid.”

He confirmed there was a power cut at 12.50am on Sunday with power restored in just under two hours and another at 5.11pm, which lasted until 7.17pm.

I didn’t realise it was a power cut. I went out and replaced all my electrical appliances thinking they were faulty.

When the power went off in Whispers, I presumed that it was closing time which it was then when I left, the music in Pussycats had stopped playing and I saw people evacuating the club so I was wondering what was going on and I realised it was a power cut.
