Search after sex assault claim

Police tapeForensic officers were scouring a sealed off alleyway in Wellington today searching for clues after a woman claimed that she was sexually assaulted shortly before 3am this morning.

The alleyway off Tan Bank, was cordoned off this morning after a woman told police about the alleged attack.

Detectives launched an investigation into the “serious sexual assault” as a team of forensic officers searched the area.

The crime scene is between Robertsons Memorials and Telford Music Academy, close to the town centre.

Chris Ammonds, Telford police spokesman, said officers could not reveal any further details about the nature of the attack until all of the necessary statements had been taken from the victim.

“Forensic officers are examining the scene and statements will be taken throughout the course of today.

“We would ask anyone with information to come forward,” Mr Ammonds said.

Jennifer Baldwin, who works in Robertsons Memorials, the shop immediately next to the scene of the incident, said: “The first thing I knew about it was when I came to work this morning.

“There was a police car parked outside. I didn’t know what it was.”

Police are now urging anyone who believes they heard or saw anything suspicious in the Tan Bank area between 1.30am and 3am to come forward with information.

Anyone who can help is asked to call officers on 08457 444888.
