Wayne’s on cue for honours

A Mid Wales pool star is aiming for the top in 2008 after picking up a host of honours on the international scene.

Wayne Smith ended last year with his second successive UK Trick Shot title and is now hoping to capitalise with success in the professional ranks.

He is currently skipper of the Welsh national side and has amassed a total of 1,500 caps during a 20-year international career.

Smith, from Llanfair Caereinion near Welshpool, is currently looking for sponsorship following his elevation into the International Pool Association’s top 64 last season.

He said: “I have never had a chance to go professional, but I now have my own business and can go professional. I got into 45th position, which allows you to go professional.

“It is not full time - but running my own business has made it easier.”

Last season saw Smith appear on Sky Sports as Wales narrowly lost 8-7 to England in the World team final, in addition to playing in the European Championships and Home Nations.

And he is hoping to capitalise on his trick shot success in Swindon in the pool arena.

“I also conduct trick shot exhibitions to help support my career in pool and I am regarded as the most talented in the UK at this type of demonstration pool.”

Smith does, however, remain loyal to his local side and still regularly appears in the Newtown Pool League for Newtown Bowling Club.
