A Shropshire MP has written to police calling for them to oppose plans for Shrewsbury’s first lap dancing club in a bid to block the business opening in the town.
Daniel Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham, said he was “appalled” at the prospect of a lap dancing club opening in the town.
Gemini Games Ltd wants to turn Central Hall, in Castle Gates, into an exotic dancing club featuring semi-naked, nude, pole and lap dances as well as private performances.
The plans for the venue were thrown out by councillors at the end of April after they claimed the site was unsuitable and would increase fear of crime among residents. But Gemini Games appealed against the decision and last month it was confirmed the appeal had been allowed.
The MP today said he had written to Chief Superintendent Guy Rutter, West Mercia Police’s Divisional Commander for Shropshire Division, asking for his support.
In his letter he writes: “The police I assume would also prefer if this business was not located in this area. Perhaps you would be kind enough to join me in also objecting to this proposal.”
Mr Kawczynski said today: “I think it’s totally out of keeping with the type of community we’re trying to build in Shrewsbury.”
Gemini Games Ltd were unavailable for comment today.

I can’t wait until the site get the go-ahead. They can book me in advance if they like.
Poles are very boring dance partners…
could danny k mp do a tassle dance perchance
oh look another bandwagon he’s jumping on, and attempting to politicise the police as well……
live & let live dan you and your mates might not like it i can not wait for them to start the entertainment.
Daniel Kawczynski please find something better to do! The lap dancing club is sure to be behind closed doors, so nothing will be seen unless you chose to visit the club. What I would like to know is how people really think this will impact on the local community in a negative way? No one seems to be able to offer any reason other than they just don’t want it…!
Why not have a lap dance club, what harm can it really do.
But I must say DK, could only be responding to calls from his constituency, he might not agree with them, but is doing what they want, at least he speaks up.

Yes I agree John, its called self preservation. Mr Kawczynski seems keen to jump on any bandwagon that he thinks will get him votes.
Wow i’m glad Daniel has the decency to speak out again this club opening. Doesn’t seem that there are many man prepared to do so (i wonder why). I think it’s sad that the idea of paying for a bit if attention of a female is so thrilling, standards are definitely lacking. That area of town is already a dark and troublesome area, it’s bound to get worse. Maybe some of the commentators would like to think how it will feel for females wanting to walk through there at night. We deserve some freedom too!
nice to see mp danny k keeping a breast of shrewsbury’s shopping areas
AND so if the police assist Daniel in stopping this club opening where then does Kawzcynski think the lads at Shrewsbury Police Station will be able to go for stag nights? Me thinks they don’t like you for asking them to help you Danny Boy.
Shrewsbury is meant to be developing into a multi-cultural town, and the fact that DK is attempting to ban a foreign type of entertainment is defeating the object!!
A club is a business, as is, for instance, a shop, and unless there were any other reasons for the business being refused seperate from it being ‘apalling’, such as illegalities like prostitution or drug-dealing, then why should the plans not be permitted??!!
For God’s sake, it’s not like childeren are going to go there, and one would rarely accidentally fall through the doors of the club!!
It annoys me, does so-called political correctness.
I think it is a disgraceful Idea and should not be allowed.
I am going to set up a petition about it as I object to it being there and I sure there are people out there who agree.
this is 21st century NOT 19th - we should be a modern liberal country and not some backward christian thing - our MP should grow up - this place will create jobs and modernise our town for the better
No-one’s going to force DK or other objectors to go to this club. I can’t say I’d want to go either but if others want to then fair enough.
It’s about time that people in this country stopped trying to tell others how to live their lives. DK should spend his time campaigning for things rather than against.
I dont think the idea of a lap dancing club is appalling! each to thier own, stag-do’s etc are all free to enjoy themselves anyway they wish, like others have said if its behind closed doors it is causing offence to no-one. In some ways I agree with Hen’s comments and I think lighting and security in the area would need to be improved to ensure women feel safe, as the chances of men being lairy and riled up after leaving a a lap dancing club are likley to be increased, but i think this needs to be done anyway as the area is very dark. After saying all of this I feel that Shrewsbury is not the place for a lap-dancing club, not because I want to pretend that the town is high brow or above such a club, but because I dont think the town is big enough or would have enough of a calling to keep the club going and is not equipped to deal with people coming from outside the town, we do not have a set-up to support it, the pubs are already packed and parking is totally insufficent. Shrewsbury is a town not a city, and we have cities close enough to us with clubs like this available.
Daniel is just trawling for votes. The club should be allowed to go ahead and if the delicate “community” of Shrewsbury are so appalled then commercial sense dictates that it will close!! What is so appalling about strippers? They are just people making a living and not hurting anyone at all!! I have walked past lap dancing clubs and when on holidays in Amsterdam walked past girls standing in the windows. I am not traumatised in any way!!
If the men in support have a meaningful relationship with a woman.. maybe they should consider protecting them. Would they choose their daughter, mum or sister to work there? Every time i have come across strip clubs etc (including in Amsterdam) it intrinsically seems to attract undesirable people. Lets not delude ourselves that men who have to ‘buy’ women are by any means well adjusted or respectful. The women of Shrewsbury should not have to avoid going to and from the train station for the sake of such a meaningless venture. As for it being the 21st century, yeah so lets discuss equality, will there be men stripping at this club!
Thank god that Daniel has the sense and decency to appose this ridiculous club. The majority of people in Shrewsbury do not want it on their doorstep for plenty of good reasons, e.g. the anti-social behaviour it will inevitably cause and the safety of the women of the town on the streets at closing time and because Shrewsbury is not the right venue for this sort of club. As for the comment someone made about it creating jobs, would they want their daughter to work there? The only people in favour are a few seedy perverts.
