Skipper Stewart Drummond has brought down the curtain on his 18-month Shrewsbury Town career by admitting: “I took the hint to leave.”
The 32-year-old, who made 73 appearances in a blue-and-amber shirt, has rejoined former club Morecambe in a £15,000 transfer.
But, while the move suits Drummond - whose family are still based in the Lancashire town - he revealed that the major reason for his departure was that he was unlikely to be kept on at Shrewsbury beyond the end of the season.
“It is easier being at Morecambe now and driving just 10 minutes around the corner to get there, but that wasn’t the biggest factor,” said Drummond.”It was more the fact that Shrewsbury accepted an offer for me and said there was no contract offer on the table.
“The manager said the club had accepted the offer and the decision was up to me.
“My agent had spoken about a new contract and had been told the club wasn’t in a position to offer me anything yet. Sometimes you have to take the hint.
“When one manager loses faith in you it’s best to part company rather than just sit out the season.
“Managers’ opinions of players change, and that’s one of those things in football.
“I understand that and there’s no hard feelings between myself and Gary or the club.”
Morecambe are due in Shrewsbury in a fortnight, but it is unlikely that Drummond will line up against his former team-mates at Oteley Road.
Peters has revealed he has a gentleman’s agreement with Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy that Drummond will not feature against Shrewsbury this season.
“I trust Sammy and as far as I’m concerned, a gentleman’s agreement is good enough,” added Peters.
