Man scares off burglars

A 23-year-old Bridgnorth man scared off two burglars as they tried to smash their way into his home. Jason Whittle, of Kings Loade, was asleep in bed when he was woken up by loud banging. He said today: “I wondered what all the banging was so I got up and could feel the bedroom floor vibrating, they were banging the door that hard.

“I went downstairs and could hear the bin being emptied, I just thought it was kids messing about emptying bins on people’s doorsteps. But then I saw the bin being smashed up against the window. They were trying to knock the door down with it.

“I switched the light on and started to open the door, at which point the two of them ran off.

“I was really annoyed about it but relieved that I was at home and they didn’t manage to get in.”

Mr Whittle, who lives on his own, contacted the police after the incident, which happened about 7.30am on Tuesday. Police today appealed for information.

Detective Constable Jason Whelan said: “As he approached his back door, he saw the outline of his black refuse bin striking the pane of glass in the door.

“The offenders were seen to run off towards the car park and down the alleyway in the direction of Underhill Street.”

Anyone with information about the incident should call police on 08457 444888, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

One of the offenders was in his late teens, of slim build with dark brown hair down to his jawline. He was about 5ft 7in tall, wearing a dark hoody and blue jeans. The second was wearing a dark top and was slightly taller.

If you can, avoid leaving bins in unsecure areas outside fronts of property.
