Kelly in call… to Mauritius!

Shropshire’s Kelly Edwards got a perfect late Christmas present - with selection for the England squad for the Commonwealth Judo Championships.

The 16-year-old will jet out to Mauritius on January 21, with the competition getting under way two days later. She is due to fly back home to Telford on January 28.

While in Mauritius she will compete in the under-48kgs category in both the junior and senior women’s sections.

Kelly only learned of her selection by letter over the weekend, and will now be looking to add to her already glowing international reputation.

The teenager, from The Rock, landed a number of titles in 2007 - winning gold at the British Senior and Junior Closed Championships, as well as the British Cadet Championships.

Kelly, who is a member of the Wrekin Star Judo Club, also took the honours at the National Age Band Championships and won a bronze medal at the European Youth Olympics back in July.

The Thomas Telford sixth former is a regular member of the GB squad and has competed around the world.

And she is one who has been singled out as a potential competitor at the London Olympics in 2012.
