Town councillors have called for “more bobbies on the beat” in a town on the Powys/Shropshire border, claiming tax payers are getting an unfair deal.
Ken Fincham, mayor of Knighton, has voiced concerns over the lack of police presence in the town.
He said: “The town has a part-time police station and there are occasional patrols in the town but never any actual policeman on the streets.
“Although Knighton doesn’t have an abundance of crime, there is a growing element which must be addressed.
“I just feel that some more patrols would prevent some of the anti-social crime taking place and act as a deterrent to anyone thinking of committing a criminal offence.”
The town council ceased regular police liaison meetings a year ago and members have been unhappy with the service ever since.
Councillor Fincham said: “Of course Knighton does not have the crime rate of bigger towns in the area but there has been an increasing rise in anti-social behaviour.
“The council is now trying to be pro-active in opening a dialogue with Dyfed Powys Police in 2008 so we can get more ‘bobbies on the beat’ in Knighton.”
Knighton town council has now sent a letter stating its concerns to Dyfed Powys Police, and the force has said it will be looking into the matter.
