Manager Gary Peters looks set to ring in the New Year by ringing the changes when Shrewsbury Town kick-off 2008 with a trip to big-spending Peterborough.Town tackle one of the pre-season favourites for promotion tomorrow, aiming to bounce back from Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat against Wycombe.
A lacklustre first-half performance - coupled with the fact Town will be playing their fourth game in 10 days - means Peters is likely to shuffle his pack for the testing assignment at London Road.
“I haven’t got any choice than to make changes and that will be down to both performance and a bit of fatigue,” he said.
“We need to go there and be as strong as we possibly can because you would say this is one of the toughest games we will face.
“You can’t spend the money Peterborough have without having good players.”
And one of the major threats Shrewsbury could come up against tomorrow is Liam Hatch, who Peters was confident of landing for a transfer fee of around £50,000 before Peterborough secured the striker’s services for £150,000.
“We thought we were close to getting him but when Peterborough with their financial power come in for him you have to drop out,” he said.
“If he plays he will be a threat. He is a handful at the best of times, let alone when he is making his debut.”
David Hunt will be available for selection for tomorrow but will miss Saturday’s home clash with Brentford after crashing through the five-booking barrier.
Town will train this afternoon before spending the night in a hotel near Peterborough as they continue to enjoy the best possible preparations for the holiday programme.
And they will be hoping to take advantage of a mini-slump in form from Darren Ferguson’s side after they received a double jolt with defeats to Mansfield and Morecambe over the Christmas period.
Places remain available on the Official Away Supporters Club coaches for tomorrow and can be reserved by contacting either 01743 770001 or 07981 593 437.
