Memorial service for councillor

Derrick HillA memorial service for a long serving Shropshire councillor will be held next week.

Derrick Hill, of Much Wenlock ,died last Sunday, aged 87.

The service is being held at Much Wenlock Church on Friday, starting at noon. The county flag at the Shirehall in Shrewsbury will also fly at half-mast as a mark of respect.

Mr Hill served as a county councillor for Much Wenlock from 1969 to 2005, during which time he served on more than 40 committees, covering subjects including transport, health and social care.

He was also a councillor for the Borough of Wenlock from 1956 to 1966, and member of Much Wenlock Rural Borough Council from 1966 to 1974, Bridgnorth Rural District Council from 1966 to 1974 and Bridgnorth District Council from 1974 to 1996.

He was also a former Mayor of Much Wenlock. In addition to his council work, Mr Hill spent time as a member of many other bodies, including the Community Council of Shropshire, Salop Area Health Authority, Citizens Advice Bureau and West Mercia Police Authority.

He was appointed a JP in 1966. The memorial service will be attended by county council chairman Brian Gillow, and Mr Hill’s family have invited other county councillors to attend.

Councillor Gillow said: “I was extremely saddened to hear of the death of Derrick Hill who was a good friend and a great servant for both Shropshire County Council and the people of Much Wenlock. His hard work and dedication will long be remembered and valued by all who had the good fortune to know him and to work alongside him.”
