Mob mentality rules at sales

SalesIn the weeks leading up to Christmas, there was a bit of a shopping frenzy in Telford with people coming from all over the country to do their Christmas shopping, writes teen blogger Rhian.

On a couple of occasions, I was almost late for work because of the traffic congestion.

If I thought that was bad though, the post-Christmas sales mania was just crazy-and I do mean crazy.

Boxing Day was busy, but when the Next opened their sale on the 27th, the retail park I work at descended into utter chaos.

It wasn’t that war had been declared and people had come to panic buy supplies, but it was that sort of mentality that was in the air and it seemed to be contagious.

Drivers were so desperate to find a parking space that courtesy went out of the window and those brave or stupid enough to walk across the car park needed to have their wits about them to avoid being mown down.

It wasn’t even safe to walk on the pavement though because early in the afternoon when the whole park was gridlocked, one stupid driver, who had obviously watched one Hollywood action movie too many, mounted the pathway and drove along it right outside the front of the shops.

The sales fever just seems to have the effect of turning normal people into selfish, horrible, lunatics and even when they then discover a bargain buy, some just can’t shake off the madness.

I tried to explain to one stressed out customer that the item he wanted could be purchased at half price if he bought it as part of a Christmas gift set that was on sale.

It was a more for less deal, but he couldn’t seem to grasp that the gift sets were cheaper because Christmas was over and we wanted to get rid of them to make way for new stock.

He was quite hostile and I just couldn’t help thinking that he was in the fast lane to an early grave if such a little thing like shopping could get him so agitated, but I guess he wasn’t the only one like that.

It’s daft, so if the cap fits, my advice is to chill out and try and get the New Year off to a nice calm start instead. Happy New Year!

i agree with most of that, but also, it works the other way regarding the car parks…I couldnt believe how many people were happy to just step out in front of my car and assume that I should stop. They weren’t on a zebra crossing they just kept appearing, very annoying as had I have hit someone due to them wanting right of way I would have had very little sympathy had someone been hurt.
