Jack SmithA Wolves-mad Shropshire youngster has received an early birthday present when he was treated to an exclusive audience with the entire Wanderers squad, including manager Mick McCarthy.

Jack Smith, who was 11 yesterday, was already familiar with some of the players in gold and black after they helped raise money for a wheelchair for the youngster, who was left paralysed by a road accident in 2004.

A match collection among the fans in April, organised by the Rotary Club, raised a club record of £2,928. Players and staff added £700 to the appeal.

The birthday boy gave thumbs-up salutes to his heroes as he watched them go through their paces at the club’s Compton training ground. Jack also exchanged high fives with goalkeepers Matt Murray and Wayne Hennessey and forwards Seyi Olofinjana and Michael Kightley.

The players signed a colour team photo and a ball for him to display in pride of place back home in his Telford bedroom.

Jack and his dad Andy Ball, 37, are home season ticket holders, watching the games from the family enclsoure in the Billy Wright stand. Andy said: “It was great of the club to remember Jack and invite him back as a birthday present.”

Jack was presented with this Powerpleas wheelchair at the end of last season.
