Wolves’ forgotten man Mark Davies is hoping to give boss Mick McCarthy a new year selection headache.
The former England under-19s captain is finally approaching full fitness after 18 months of knee problems and wants to fill the void left by Seyi Olofinjana, who leaves for the African Nations Cup on January 5.
Davies, who turns 20 in February, has been delayed by a shoulder injury sustained on reserve duty but is aiming to be back in senior contention soon.
“I’m just working hard now to try and get myself back into the team,” said Davies. “I had a slight shoulder injury but it was nothing and if I was asked to play then I could now.
“I’m fully fit and I think I could hold up if I was asked to play through a few games.” Davies is hoping to press his claims during Olofinjana’s enforced absence, although he’s taking nothing for granted.
“Hopefully, but we’ll have to see,” he said. “There’s me, Stephen Gleeson and Darren Potter who aren’t in the team at the moment and I’m sure we’re all looking to get in. But it’s up to the gaffer.”
Davies played the last of his 27 League appearances on April 14 in the 2-2 draw at Crystaal Palace as a late substitute for Michael Kightly.
Knee problems dogged the midfielder throughout last season and restricted his chances of a breakthrough.
“It’s been frustrating being out for so, so long,” he said. “I’ve just not been fit for long enough to really press home a claim to be in the team, so the most important thing for me is to stay fit.
“I’ve said before I just want to keep fit and training and playing to the best of my ability so I can try and get back in the team.”
But he has dismissed the thoughts of following some of his fellow Academy graduates out on loan. “I really want to stay at Wolves and get in the team here,” he said. “I haven’t spoken to the gaffer about it yet.”
McCarthy said: “Mark was getting closer and then he hurt his shoulder, so we’ll see how he is.
“Lewis Gobern is back in training. If they’re fit, these lads can give us a selection problem in January.
“But they have been out for so long. I’d love them to be back and in and around the squad.”

GET HIM IN MICK HE MIGHT JUST SAVE YOUR JOB!!!
KIWI………
Hooray.
George has been really poor over the last 5-10 games and him going on AN duty might not be such a bad thing for me.
I think Davies is exactly what we need, an attacking midfielder that can cause opposition defenses problems and possibly notch here and there.
This is an awful run we’re on, but still beleive in Mick and the team.
