The driver of a milk lorry which overturned on a busy trunk road and caused disruption for thousands of Shropshire motorists has apologised.
The A5 in Shrewsbury was brought to a standstill on Saturday morning after the vehicle crashed into a pelican crossing and blocked the eastbound carriageway at Dobbies Island.
The accident happened at 6am but the road was closed up to Edgebold Island for most of the day as shoppers poured into the county town.
But the driver of the lorry has e-mailed the Shropshire Star to pass on his apologies for the tailbacks.
He said he wanted to thank all of the emergency services who went to his aid and were required to cut him free from his cab, before taking him to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with minor leg injuries.
He said: “I’m recovering myself from that difficult stressful two-hour ordeal. Have a merry Christmas and sorry for any delays.”
Two fire crews and the rescue tender from Wellington were called to the accident and had to use specialist equipment to free the driver.
A spokeswoman for Shropshire Ambulance Service said paramedics took the driver to the RSH after leaving the scene by 7.45am.
A police spokeswoman said the lorry had been travelling north on the A5 and hit the pelican crossing just after exiting the Dobbies Island.
She said it then overturned onto its side and blocked the carriageway.
Traffic which entered Shrewsbury on the A5 from the Telford direction was diverted.
It was a busy weekend for the emergency services with two fire crews from Shrewsbury and the rescue tender from Wellington being called to an accident on the A49 at Dorrington on Saturday.
The three-car collision happened shortly before midday, although nobody was trapped. A fire service spokeswoman said the crews were only required to make the vehicles safe.
One fire crew from Shrewsbury was also called to an accident in Hereford Road, Belle Vue, on Friday at 10.45pm.
A spokesperson said the incident involved one vehicle but they were only required to make the car safe.
Ambulance crews offered first aid at the scene but said nobody was seriously hurt or taken to hospital.
