Police quiz man over murders

shaw1.jpgA suspect hunted by police in connection with a double murder in Shropshire was yesterday being quizzed by detectives after being arrested on Monday.

Sukhdav Singh, who worked at Shawbury Fish Bar and lived in the flat above, was arrested on suspicion of murder yesterday following a five-day hunt.

Mr Singh, also known as Dave or Shera, was arrested in Smethwick, West Midlands, accused of murdering two Asian men.

Their bodies were discovered in the flat above the shop where he worked, on Friday morning.

Both men, in their 20s, had suffered head injuries. No murder weapon has yet been found.

Leading detectives released a photograph of Mr Singh on Monday, naming him as a suspect in the case. They said all ports and airports had been notified in case he tried to flee the country to the Punjab region of India, where his family lived.

One of the victims worked with Mr Singh in the Shawbury chip shop, while the second victim worked at Moston Road Fish Bar, Harlescott, Shrewsbury.

Detective Chief Inspector Jon Collier confirmed Mr Singh had been traced and arrested.

“He was arrested at a location in Smethwick by West Mercia officers acting on information gained by the investigation team based at the incident room in Telford.

“Sukhdav has been taken into custody at Telford Police Station where he is being interviewed about the deaths,” he said.

Mr Collier urged anyone with any knowledge of Mr Singh or his movements to call the incident room in Telford on 08457 444888.
