A former wool warehouse in Shrewsbury, which dates back to the 15th century, could be converted into a restaurant to complement the town’s new £28 million theatre.
Welsh Bridge House, in Frankwell Quay, is currently a residential property but its owners want to let it to someone to take on as a restaurant or cocktail bar. Part of the building, on the Welsh Bridge, side, is leased by the Frank cafe bar.
The business will be unaffected by the new plans.
Richard Cooper, of Shrewsbury-based Richard Cooper Chartered Surveyors, said he had spoken to borough planners about part of the property becoming a restaurant. He said the warehouse, the former headquarters of Shropshire Wildlife Trust, shared a courtyard with the new theatre.
Mr Cooper said: “As there is no plan for a restaurant in the new theatre it struck my client that it was a good location for a restaurant and cocktail bar that would ideally complement it.”
He said planners had supported the idea in principle but said a planning application was needed to take the proposals further.
The building is listed and part of it reportedly dates to about 1480. Mr Cooper said a return of the property to commercial use was expected shortly.
Mr Cooper said further refurbishment of the party wall between the warehouse and the open access to the theatre will be carried out shortly by Willmott Dixon, which is building the theatre.
The venue is expected to open in November next year.
