Tony rings up winning return

Talented Shropshire boxer Tony Jones has ended an 11-month exile from the ring with a convincing victory across the county.

The Shrewsbury ABC fighter made the short trip to Donnington to take on A Hussain (Merlin) - and was an emphatic points winner.

It was a first outing since January for Jones, who is Midlands junior champion and a two-time national finalist.

His last outing saw him beating Devon’s Ben Chapple in Barnstable, and that was a sweet victory for Jones, who had actually been an unlucky loser to the same fighter for the national crown just weeks earlier.

Coming out against Hussain, he showed no ring-rustiness with coach Brian Robb declaring: “From the first bell Jones forced the pace, pinning Hussain on the ropes numerous times in fierce exchanges.

“Hussain tried to keep it long but Jones simply walked through whatever he threw at him.”

The pair will now meet again in a re-match at Shrewsbury Town’s new football stadium on Oteley Road on Tuesday evening on a show that has already been sold out for six weeks.

It’s been a busy month for Robb and his team of fighters from Shrewsbury. Among others in action was England representative Craig ‘Boy’ Green.

He made the short trip to Wolverhampton to fight recent national finalist Ryan Fennelly in his home city.

It was a good night for Green, who produced a super display of boxing on his way to a unanimous points decision. It sets him up nicely for his next bout, with Midlands champion Ashley Carter (Solihull).

On the same bill at Wolverhampton, novice fighter Robbie Sowden made his debut against K Starkey from Bedworth. And it was Sowden who won a majority decision after an excellent last round.

Sowden was in action again just four days later, suffering his first defeat against H Ahmed (Nechells).

It was a controversial result, though, with Sowden seeming to dominate the fight - only for an astonishing majority decision to go against him.

Schoolboy Josh Northey was in action against Midlands champion P McCann in Kettering, and lost on a majority decision.

Northey had been behind in the first two rounds, with Robb sending him out in the third telling him he needed a knockout.

He gave it a good go, but McCann held on and stayed on his feet to see the fight out.

On the same bill in Northamptonshire, unbeaten schoolboy Dan Cartwright made it five from five against Kettering’s Liam Smith, who had come into the bout with a five from five record of his own.

Cartwright added to his growing reputation with a unanimous points decision, the victory never looking in doubt from the start.
