Date for father and son funerals

Died - Symon Howlett and son Jay, 5The funerals of the Shropshire father and son who died in the sea off Spain will take place in their home town on Friday.

Symon Howlett, 32, from Market Drayton, rescued his nine-year-old son Thomas, but died as he tried in vain to save Jay, five, after the two boys were swept off the beach by a freak wave.

The family were enjoying their time on the Mar Menuda in Tossa de Mar, Costa Brava, on November 21 when the wave came through the rocks.

After the tragedy, Thomas and Mr Howlett’s wife Deborah were looked after by staff at the Tossa Beach Hotel where they were staying.

The funeral service for the father and son will take place at St Mary’s Church in Market Drayton at 11am on Friday followed by a reception at the Royal British Legion Club.Donations will be divided between The British Diabetic Association and a memorial fund in memory of Jay for football.

A remembrance party in memory of Jay will also be held at Shrewsbury Sport Village on December 16 between 2pm and 4pm.

A coach will leave Towers Lawn in Market Drayton at 1pm.

The Howlett family have described Symon as a hero.

In a statement they said: “Symon has always been Debbie’s hero and due to his unselfish act, everyone can now see what a true hero he is.”
