Jez Moxey today rounded on claims that the Mick McCarthy job scare had triggered a pay rise for the manager and claimed: “It’s not about the money.”The Wolves Chief Executive brought the curtain down on an unexpectedly dramatic 24 hours at Molineux, triggered by the prospect of McCarthy taking over South Korea’s national team, by today quashing claims the mini-crisis had only been resolved by a pay rise for McCarthy.
Moxey and McCarthy emerged from a near four-hour meeting with owner Steve Morgan at the multi-millionaire’s Cheshire mansion yesterday to issue statements re-affirming the commitment of the current managerial regime to the Molineux agenda.
But that was followed by speculation today that McCarthy had earned improved terms in his one-year rolling contract as a sweetener for staying - claims that drew a robust response from the club’s chief officer.
Moxey, a staunch ally and backer of the manager, said: “It is just speculation which I will have nothing to do with - our policy has never been to discuss such agreements in public.
“But I will say this. This is not about the money, this is about unfinished business and building something sustainable, looking for the long term success of Wolves.
“It’s about honestly building something we all hope will be truly special - Mick has got the Wolves bug and wants to be here for a long time to come.
“It’s not about being crass, about money and contracts and all that business. It’s about Henry, Hennessey, Kightly, Ward, Collins, Keogh, Eastwood and the rest.
“We feel really good about the club and its future and we all want to play our part in bringing success to Wolves. That’s what this is all about.”
McCarthy was back at the training ground early today to begin preparations for Saturday’s home clash against Burnley when the Molineux public will get a chance to give its own response to a dramatic Wednesday.
But Moxey believes that, far from harm his relationship with supporters, the events of the previous 24 hours will strengthen the bond,
He added: “Mick did not go looking for another job. He was approached by a third party and he has said ‘no.’ I think there is great appreciation from the supporters for what he has already achieved here and this episode will, if anything, strengthen that feeling.”
