Shrewsbury Town’s board of directors today backed Gary Peters to turn around the side’s current slump and mount a promotion challenge in the second half of the season.A run of just one victory in the last 10 games has created some unrest among sections of Town supporters.
But vice-chairman Keith Sayfritz, speaking on behalf of the Board, insists the club’s hierarchy remain confident Town can yet muscle into the promotion picture.
“I think we started very, very well in a new stadium but over the last few weeks the results have been disappointing to everyone, not least Gary, the chairman (Roland Wycherley) and the Board,” said Sayfritz.
“But I would ask our fans to look at it in a broader context. We have just moved into a new stadium and the matchday experience has changed out of all recognition for the better.
“Most teams which move into a new stadium have a period of adjustment.
“There are a lot of games to go and there is no reason we shouldn’t be challenging at the top of the table come the end of the season.
“We are about halfway up the League and, from my own personal point of view, in the games against Darlington and Walsall we have started to play more like our old selves.
“We are not writing it (the season) off at all because we we still feel we can challenge and will do what we can to make that happen.
“Since Gary has come into the club three years ago we have made solid progress every season.
“If this proves to be a season of consolidation then so be it - sometimes you have to accept in football that things don’t go as well as you would like.
“But I can tell everyone that is not what Gary, the chairman and the Board are aiming for.”
Sayfritz, meanwhile, has called on all supporters to unite behind the team ahead of this Saturday’s home clash with Barnet.
“Nobody hates losing more than we do and anyone who doesn’t think we care only has to be in the boardroom when we have lost.
“When we have congratulated the visiting directors and said cheerio to them, the place is like a morgue.”

Hmmm?
Is it the “Vote of Confidence” next?
The board are in a difficult position with the press. They’re damned if they do respond to questions and they’re damned if they don’t.
Does anyone know if season tickets can be refunded?
Keep Peters and we’ll see you in the Conference next season.
Gary is a wonderful man and Town are lucky to have him. Remember, it’s only recently that he turned down the advances of a Premiership club!
The fans should give the ultimate “vote of confindence” with their feet. That said we’re only STFC and have come a long way lately, despite many barriers like local residents and some local political point scorers. We need to all pull together for our club.
Come on you Blues!
The Christmas period is going to be vital to Town and could be a turning point in the season
sack him he’s lost the plot and the confidence of his players. He’s took them as far as he can. Advances from a premier league side??? do make a favour Harold!!!! he wouldn’t get advances in the Butter Market!! There are some high profile managers out there at the moment who are needed to turn the corner for your Club. You have a great stadium and squad but he’s limiting you now!!!!
I still think its down to the coaching staff not getting the best out of the players. Its happened with quite a few in the past that have been scoring for fun at other clubs and then mysteriously dry up when they get to the Town.Mick Wadsworth was OK but Leroy Rosineor was better. Why do you think Mick took him to Gretna?
Weve got a good team and a good manager but GP needs to be strong and get a decent coach in from somewhere.
Davies and Cooke returning from injury and Jimmy Ryan also available soon.
Wainwright back in the squad for Saturday and some improved performances of late. We just need the results to go with it now.
Are you nervous types feeling better now?
THE FANS HAVE NEVER TAKEN TO THE MAN, THEY WANT ATTACKING FOOTBALL,PLEASE GO PETERS.
Bill, I consider myself to be one of THE FANS. Could you please speak for yourself and NOT me.
Advances from a Premiership side, yeah, from Fulham, to be a junior scout!
Get Peters out, get Leroy Rosenior back in as coach and bring in someone who CAN help make Shrewsbury Town great again. Names like Brian Little, Peter Reid, Glenn Hoddle, Kevin Keegan or Kenny Dalglish.
Nice to see the board keeping a level head.
Let’s get behind the team and the manager, we’ve come a long way in 3 years
UP THE TOWN
Dont no what some of these people are going on about GP is the best manager we have in years. we have good players and still cookey and benno to come back from injury we will be ok this season keep the faith,if the whingers dont like it dont go
Little possibly but Kenny Dalglish, Hoddle, Keegan and Reid? As Ricky Gervais’ character in Extras might say: “You having a laugh?”
A win on Saturday could start to turn things round. I don’t see the point in sacking G.P when we’re mid table in November…Our squad has potential and the last 2 performances have seen improvement eventhough the results haven’t come as yet. It’s good that fans have their say and voice opinions but don’t believe Ade the Buck he is just jealous…Up the Town !
Peters is great, see you next year, well done Walsall.
Ed - you’re underselling the club mate. Personally I’d try to entice Sven Goran away from Man City or failing that pick up Terry Venables if he ever leaves the England set up!
The only way that Town will be playing Telford in the foreseable future is in the Shropshire senior cup and thats only because TNS arn’t in it…..yet !!!
Do Telford still have a football club?
Well they do have a new version apparently called AFC Telford. This as the old lot Telford United went bankrupt recently.Bless…
The jibes against Telford to take away the anger of beeing a town fan, Hmm i still back peters but dont have to have petty throw backs to another team, who are only 1 level away from whence they came, leave Telford to have big chips on their shoulders simple, we are better than that far better.
