Shrews fans get parking boost

Fans struggling to find a parking spot when going to watch Shrewsbury Town could soon get a boost after the club secured a deal to use a site for additional parking.

The club is in final negotiations to use a field next to Sutton Grange Nursery for match day parking, with supporters able to buy permits to use it. The nursery is a short distance from the ground in Oteley Road.

Permits will apply for the 16 home fixtures starting with the Barnet game on November 17.

A letter sent to fans says the permits will cost £100 - £6 per game plus £4 in administration, postage and transaction costs.

It says: “The club is providing this as a service but will not retain any proceeds - these will be used to cover the cost of permits, obligatory stewarding and fees for the private landowner.

“This car park will only be available for permit holders, each of whom will be guaranteed a space, except in those circumstances where adverse weather prevents use of the site.

“In those rare circumstances the club will not be able to offer alternative parking but will, of course, make arrangements to refund the parking cost for the affected match.”

The club says the permits will also apply for FA Cup home draws and the England Ladies International on November 25, but motorists will be asked to pay an extra £6 on the day, and display their permit. It expects demand to be high and will introduce a priority scheme from November 13, with season ticket holders and those living further away to receive permits first.

The letter says: “The club feels that the chance to secure a guaranteed space may be of most benefit to ‘exiles’ who travel significant distances.”

Andrew Frank, of Sutton Grange Nurseries, said he believed the use of the field would help reduce parking problems on match days.
